How long does it take?

Your wine will usually leave us for delivery to you within a fortnight from your payment date.

When will my wine arrive?

Is it refrigerated?

No; given the relatively brief transit period in temperature-controlled conditions, significant heat exposure is avoided.

How do I contact Vincurable?

Cork Flaws

In what circumstances should I have concerns about the cork?

Old wines commonly have fragile (and very slowly deteriorating) corks, but where the bottle’s fill level is acceptable, this simply suggests that a tenuous cork should be closely monitored and the wine consumed expediently if worrisome ullage becomes apparent, particularly in the presence of a weeping cork. However, serious concerns are raised when signs of heat damage are apparent, or where the cork is clearly failing.

Does Vincurable guarantee me against heat damage?

Yes; we ensure every bottle of wine we procure and supply is immune from the ravages of poor storage and shipping. Thus, we guarantee the impeccable provenance of your purchase and unequivocally attest that it will not be heat-damaged (madeirised) when it leaves our cellars.

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a heat-damaged bottle?

Yes; we will refund you for, or replace, demonstrably heat-damaged bottles of wine, including those displaying wine track lines along the cork and/or an elevated cork. We will only refund you where this can be demonstrated by you not to have occurred during (non-refrigerated) domestic delivery to you. For further information, please read our product returns, refunds and replacements terms & conditions.

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a bottle with excessive ullage?

Yes; we guarantee that your bottle’s ullage will be consistent with, or less than, that to be typically expected for the bottling and age of the wine you have purchased. Moreover, we guarantee that the ullage you observe (if any) will be unrelated to heat exposure, and solely related to the wine’s normal bottle maturation process (in particular, under cork).

We will refund you for, or replace, bottles of wine that demonstrate excessive ullage, as defined in the ullage section of our wine information page, whether the cause be related to a weeping cork due to heat exposure, or isolated cork failure. We will only refund you where this can be demonstrated by you not to have occurred during (non-refrigerated) domestic delivery to you. For further information, please read our product returns, refunds and replacements terms & conditions.

How quickly do I have to notify Vincurable if I wish to request a return, refund or replacement?

You must notify us within 24 hours of receipt of your wine, so please ensure that you or your agent (including your storage facility) are confident of the integrity of all of your bottles as soon as they are received.

What if I have opened the bottle?

It is critical that you don’t open a bottle that you have concerns about: if the bottle has been opened, we are unable to arrange a return for a refund or replacement bottle, or insurance claim, for any reason.

Cork Taint

What is cork taint?

Cork taint (also referred to as TCA) is an affliction of wine that when encountered is often referred to as a corked wine – and has nothing to do with having bits of cork in your wine. For further information regarding cork taint, please read the bad things section on our wine information page.

Does Vincurable guarantee that my wine isn’t afflicted by cork taint?

No; we are unable to ascertain the presence of faults which are entirely beyond our control.

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a wine afflicted by cork taint?

No; unfortunately, we are not in a position to refund you for, or replace, a bottle where a wine procured by us in good faith from our reputable suppliers is afflicted by cork taint, unbeknownst to all concerned. This is most pertinent where wines bottled under cork are purchased from distant winemakers who will not refund for, or replace, bottles which have fallen victim to this malady, and where the laborious and prohibitively expensive reimportation process makes such a travail impracticable – both conditions generally applying to the wines that we import. For detailed information regarding faulty wines, please read our product returns, refunds and replacements terms & conditions.

Rest assured that we are just as disappointed as you when a bottle doesn’t open up as well as we had hoped it would, particularly a treasured or expensive one.

Can I drink a wine afflicted by cork taint and possibly enjoy it?

Yes; there is one method that we have found to be quite effective in removing TCA from an afflicted bottle, although it won’t return any of the wine's fruit that may have been stripped by the offending fungus:

Pour the bottle of wine into a sealable, inert container which contains a few metres of polyethylene sheet (such as Glad Wrap) scrunched up into a ball. Seal the container and refrigerate – minimal air contact above the wine and a low temperature are essential to minimise oxidation while the polyethylene goes to work. TCA has a high affinity for the large surface area of plastic on offer, and will be drawn out of solution. Assess the wine half-hourly, and when you can no longer detect TCA, remove the polyethylene sheet, bring the wine back up to serving temperature, and proceed to drink it immediately.

If the wine still doesn’t meet your palate’s high standards, don’t throw it away – corked wine is perfectly good for cooking, so refrigerate it in preparation for your next coq au vin!

Corked Wine

What is a corked wine?

Corked wine is wine that has been afflicted with cork taint (also referred to as TCA) – and has nothing to do with having bits of cork in your wine. For further information regarding cork taint, please read the bad things section on our wine information page.

Does Vincurable guarantee that my wine isn’t corked?

No; we are unable to ascertain the presence of faults which are entirely beyond our control.

En Primeur

What is en primeur?

En primeur translates as an exclusive – a new product you get to see or hear about first!

Also known as wine futures or indent, en primeur is a method of buying wine of a particular vintage while the wine itself is still maturing in barrel, prior to being bottled for release.

Typically, the winemakers of a region invite influential wine merchants and critics to taste barrel samples of their wines. Once the gamut of offerings has been assessed, these oracles of the wine intelligentsia publish their opinions – all of which wine enthusiasts like you and I read avidly. Indeed, the most prestigous wine merchants and famous wine critics exert enormous influence on the reception given to a new vintage at this point, and inevitably, its pricing.

Subsequently, the winemakers will digest these reviews and in turn declare an opening gambit price for a portion of their total production to the market. Fuelled by the collective assessment of a particular wine, the market’s pent-up demand for the wine at its opening price may see it sold en un instant, triggering further allocations, known as tranches, that command successively higher prices.

Thus, an opportunity exists to buy a coveted wine at its cheapest market price by purchasing as early as possible. However, there is no guarantee that this price will hold, and hence, a risk versus reward conundrum comes into play. In this sense, en primeur is often viewed as a form of gambling, or investment, and many buyers secure parcels of their chosen bottlings with no intention of ever drinking these allocations – indeed, they plan to re-sell them from day one.

Who releases wines en primeur?

Most famous is the annual Bordeaux Spring campaign. However, other regions have adopted this approach, including Burgundy, the Rhône and the Duoro (Vintage Port). As well as creating excitement around a particular vintage and the limited opportunity to obtain lauded, revered and trophy wines, sometimes only available in miniscule quantites, the system facilitates guaranteed, maximal sales and optimal cash flow for the producers involved.

What are the potential advantages?

Firstly, you secure a guaranteed allocation of the wine you want to cellar at the opening price. Secondly, if you have assessed the state of the wine market and the potential of the winemaker, the wine and the vintage correctly, you may also have secured the wine at its lowest-ever price. Thirdly, you can specify the bottling format of your choice, usually at a small additional price if not the 750ml standard. Finally, the wine may be more expensive to buy down the track due to increased government imposts alone (they rarely reduce!).

What are the potential disadvantages?

Firstly, if you have incorrectly assessed the state of the wine market and the potential of the winemaker, the wine and the vintage, you may not have secured the wine at its lowest-ever price. Secondly, the wine, once bottled, may not live up to its previously perceived pedigree in barrel. Thirdly, the wine may be cheaper to buy down the track due to currency fluctuations alone. Fourthly, you are committed to paying the relevant domestic government imposts at the time of importation, whatever they may be well down the track... Finally, and worst of all, you may never see your wine if your supplier goes broke or disappears during the two years or so before your wine’s scheduled delivery – an unmitigated disaster.

Does Vincurable buying wines en primeur?

Yes; we are very experienced in the workings of en primeur campaigns, and offer personal advice and service in all aspects of purchasing wine in this manner, whether for private cellaring, trading or longer-term investment.

Is the en primeur wine's price in Australian dollars?

Yes; we only work in Australian dollars.

Is the en primeur wine's price all-inclusive?

Yes; it is a landed price.

What is a landed price?

The landed price is a sum that encompasses every cost incurred in sourcing and shipping your wine to Australia, bringing it through Australian Customs on your behalf, and temporarily storing it for you, with no more to pay.

Does the landed price include GST?

Yes; the landed price is GST-inclusive.

Is the landed price fixed & final?

Yes; in all but one circumstance, it is a fixed and final price.

In what circumstance can the landed price vary even if it is fixed & final?

The landed price will only alter if Australian Government imposts (duties, tariffs and taxes) change after your purchase date, but before the importation date – when your wine physically passes through Australian Customs. In this circumstance, an adjustment in the landed price may be required. For further information, please read our product landed price terms & conditions.

Will currency exchange rate fluctuations affect the landed price?

No; the wine’s landed price is fixed and unaffected by changes in currency exchange rates after the date of purchase.

Is Vincurable’s price the cheapest?

We hope so; we scour the market to source the best-priced parcels of en primeur wines. Having accomplished that, we secure, ship, store, and deliver them to our customers at the lowest-possible margin.

When will my wine arrive?

It will generally be one – two years (or slightly longer, allowing for consolidation and shipping), whilst the wine matures in barrel and is subsequently bottled, depending upon the type of wine. We can give you a better indication of the expected landing date at the time of purchase.

Errors

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a bottle if I receive the wrong wine?

Yes; we will refund you for, or replace, the bottle where a wine procured by us in good faith from our reputable suppliers is not the wine that you ordered – whether by winemaker, wine or vintage. Please be advised that this will happen rarely and inadvertently – both we and our suppliers take great care to ensure that your requirements are addressed precisely.

Will I receive a refund or a replacement?

We will consult with you regarding your preferred method of reimbursement, and at our discretion, refund you the purchase price for, or replace, the bottle. We will, where possible, accommodate your preferred method of reimbursement.

What conditions apply to me obtaining a refund or replacement bottle in this circumstance?

Various conditions apply – for detailed information regarding these, please read our product returns, refunds and replacements terms & conditions.

Exchange Rates

Will exchange rate fluctuations affect the price of my wine?

No; the wine’s landed price is fixed and unaffected by changes in currency exchange rates after the date of purchase.

Excises

Do I have any excises to pay?

No; we take care of these for you.

Why not?

We calculate the cost of all Australian Government imposts, including excise. We include this expenditure in the price of your wine.

What excise is included?

Australian excise is included, and is applicable only to Australian wines and spirits, not imported wines and spirits.

Faulty Wine

Does Vincurable guarantee that its wines aren't faulty?

No; we are unable to ascertain the presence of faults which are entirely beyond our control.

Which faults are these?

These include wines afflicted with brett, cork taint, ladybird taint and sulphitic wines. They also include wines demonstrating other winemaking faults inherent to the process of vinification, including random premature oxidation, and unrelated to the bottle's storage and shipping, which only become apparent at the time of opening. For detailed information regarding faulty wines, please read our product returns, refunds and replacements terms & conditions.

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a faulty wine?

No; unfortunately, we are not in a position to refund you for, or replace, a bottle where a wine procured by us in good faith from our reputable suppliers is faulty, unbeknownst to all concerned.

Rest assured that we are just as disappointed as you when a bottle doesn’t open up as well as we had hoped it would, particularly a treasured or expensive one.

Freight

1)

Sea Freight To Australia

Is this Vincurable's routine method of shipping?

Yes; sea freight to Australia, which we refer to as shipping, is our routine method of shipping your wine.

How long does it take?

It usually takes a few months for your wine to arrive in Australia.

When will my wine arrive?

We can give you a better indication of the expected landing date at the time of purchase.

Is it refrigerated?

Yes, we only use refrigerated shipping containers.

Is the cost included in the price of the wine?

Yes; in full.

Does the cost of sea freight include GST?

Yes; where GST is applicable, the cost of shipping is GST-inclusive.

Is my wine insured?

Yes; we invariably insure the wine for loss (including theft) and breakage, for the purchase price of the wine, during its transit to Australia.

2)

Air Freight To Australia

Is air freight Vincurable's routine method of shipping?

No; this is an alternative shipping method that you may wish to consider if you require your wine sooner.

How long does it take?

Your wine will usually leave us for delivery to you within a fortnight from your payment date.

When will my wine arrive?

We can give you a better indication of the expected landing date at the time of purchase.

Is it refrigerated?

No; given the relatively brief transit period in temperature-controlled conditions, significant heat exposure is avoided.

Is the cost included in the price of the wine?

No; the cost of shipping (sea freight) is included, but air freight incurs a surcharge because it is an alternative and more expensive method of shipping.

When do I pay this surcharge?

The air freight surcharge is calculated and added to your order when payment is made.

What does it cost?

Air freight is relatively expensive, and varies according to the volume of wine you purchase and its total cost. The cost per case decreases as you increase the size of your order, so it is more economical for larger orders. Once you have chosen all of the wine that you wish to purchase, you can assess the additional cost of air freight using our shipping page air freight surcharge calculator.

Does the air freight surcharge include GST?

Yes; where GST is applicable, the cost of air freight is GST-inclusive.

Is my wine insured?

Heat-damaged Wine

We will refund you for, or replace, bottles of wine that demonstrate excessive ullage, as defined in the ullage section of our wine information page, related to a weeping cork due to heat exposure.

TCA

What is TCA?

TCA (also referred to as cork taint) is an affliction of wine that when encountered is often referred to as a corked wine – and has nothing to do with having bits of cork in your wine. For further information regarding cork taint, please read the bad things section on our wine information page.

Does Vincurable guarantee that my wine isn’t afflicted by TCA?

No; we are unable to ascertain the presence of faults which are entirely beyond our control.

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a wine afflicted by TCA?

Can I drink a wine afflicted by TCA and possibly enjoy it?

Ullage

What is acceptable ullage?

Acceptable ullage is defined in the ullage section of our wine information page – here you can assess reasonable fill levels in Bordeaux and Burgundy (and similarly shaped) bottles at different ages.

Will Vincurable refund me for, or replace, a bottle with excessive ullage?

Yes; we guarantee that your bottle’s ullage will be consistent with, or less than, that to be typically expected for the bottling and age of the wine you have purchased. Moreover, we guarantee that the ullage you observe (if any) will be unrelated to heat exposure, whether due to poor storage or shipping, and solely related to the wine’s normal bottle maturation process (in particular, under cork). Thus, we guarantee the impeccable provenance of your purchase and unequivocally attest that it will not be heat-damaged (madeirised) when it leaves our cellars.
